What to Do if you Experience the Accelerator Pedal Sticking
Motorists experiencing accelerator pedal sticking were advised to take the following steps: If the accelerator pedal sticks in a partially open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. Don't pump the brakes because it could deplete the vacuum assist. That would make it even harder to depress the brake pedal. The brakes will stop the vehicle no matter the throttle position. After multiple government investigations, receiving over 2000 complaints, pushing from the National Highway Safety Administration, and finally a crash involving the deaths of four family members, Toyota was forced to increase its own investigation into "unintended acceleration accidents" on some of its vehicle models. The tragedy that contributed to this investigation was when a Lexus ES 350 Sedan manufactured by Toyota crashed into another sport utility vehicle, knocked down a fence, rolled over and burst into flames. Those killed in the accident were an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer (the driver), his wife, daughter, and brother-in-law.
This is seen as a slow awakening due to Toyota dismissing complaints and issues surrounding the unintended or sudden acceleration for quite some time. As recently as fall 2009, Toyota claimed the only cause of any sudden acceleration was because of loose floor mats and proceeded to disclose the federal traffic safety agency sided with them in saying "there is no evidence to support" another conclusion. Shortly thereafter, however, a statement was issued by the federal agency to the contrary saying "this matter is not closed" and the statement issued by Toyota was "misleading and inaccurate".
